It is very rare these days to have contractors who arrive on time, stick to their estimates, and do a first class job. As you are aware our design for the fence was slightly different but your extra suggestions and finishing touches made it all the better. We also enjoyed your company and good humour. When we bought a Grade 2 Listed Georgian house in 2000 we inherited Tony Stephens as our builder and have counted ourselves very lucky to have done so. He has carried out major and minor works for us including a complete renovation of the roof, outside painting, flooring of 2 bathrooms with new tiling - a job which 2 other firms said could not be done - and many other minor jobs to a consistently high standard. His team are very professional and cause a minimum of disruption and major work is kept stress free for the owners. I have no hesitation in recommending him as quality craftsman who has become a friend!
Having bought a house and moving to a town where we didn’t know anyone, we decided to ask the estate agent which builders he would get to work on his own house. He recommended A.P. Stephens and Son. We contacted the company and two representatives came to the house to assess what work was needed and how much it would cost. Several days later, we received their quote in the mail, which included their price for the work and the required materials, competitive rental price for scaffolding and a very detailed assessment of work that needed to be carried out. We had an independent building survey carried out prior to this by our surveyor and what A.P. Stephens suggested matched exactly our surveyor’s suggestions.
We gave the go ahead and we were given a time frame for when the work would be done. Although some of the work was very much weather dependent, we were lucky with sunny and dry days.
Materials and equipment arrived on the start day and each stage of the work was then carried out on a strictly adhered to timetable and we were impressed when specific craftsmen turned up at their allotted time exactly on the dot, to do their bit. Even the two daily tea breaks were at a designated time and length. Likewise, at the end of each day, any rubble or mess was cleaned up in preparation for the next day.
The nature of the work involved both modern building techniques, materials etc., and also more traditional skills and materials that were required on a listed property. All the work was undertaken at the highest skill level and the craftsmen involved were obviously very proud of their work. The completed work, finished on time and at the quoted price, was both pleasing and very impressive.
From previous experience, we know that having the builders in can be an extremely stressful time. However, we have no hesitation in stating that our experience of A.P. Stephens and Son was one that was both smooth and painless. Similarly, as a result of our experience, we would have no hesitation in recommending highly this company.
Over several months we were able to closely observe Courtney Developments building three houses opposite us and subsequently had no hesitation in asking them to undertake a project for us.
The construction process ran extremely smoothly from start to finish and all the tradesmen involved were thoroughly professional, tidy and courteous and obviously took enormous pride in their work. Yet each was very approachable and would always explain what they were doing when we showed interest.
The project was managed splendidly with a timely first class outcome – we found it an enjoyable and rewarding experience. Based on that experience we have no reservations about recommending them.
I have known Tony Stephens and his family for a number of years. I wanted to pass on my thanks to all you at A.P Stephens & Son LTD. You have created a wonderful garage, large enough area for 2 cars and a workshop, fully furnished to our requirements. My garage was damp and cold, unable to store any tools or cars due to the amount of water and damp, coming up from the ground.
